Maddie grew up in an average, well-off family, or that's how it appeared from the outside. As a child, Maddie grew up with her mom, dad, and her twin sister, Maddison. Her and Maddison got along great as children. The two could be considered each other's best friend. As time went on, their mom developed a habit of comparing the two. She would often favor Maddison over Maddie. Both had their own strengths and qualities of course. Maddison thrived in academic settings and even got to be part of her school's honor's program. But Maddie? Something about her felt lost, and it felt like she was just not worth it. In her perspective, her mom thought of Maddison as the smarter and more capable one of the two.
Little by little, a distance was created between the two girls. Slowly, this affected Maddie and her insecurities, as well as tainting her relationship with her mom. Maddie would try her best to catch up to her sister, but it never felt like enough. As they became teenagers, Maddie became progressively prettier. She knew this because this was the only positive thing her mom would mention about her. Maddie noticed this and began to cling on to it. Upon learning about beauty and fashion on her own, she spent most of her time and energy towards looking as pretty as possible. She prided herself in becoming that pretty and sociable girl, because that was good too, she thought. Maybe this did end up working for her. She felt there were less of her mom's comparisons, but maybe she had gotten so used to them she had completely blocked them out of her head. But she also spent a lot of time out with her friends. It became less common to see Maddison during this period. Maddison was always busy with her own studies, the two of them were basically in their own little worlds. Despite this, Maddie never despised her sister, but she did envy her.
Their dad had long noticed the favoritism their mom had over the two. He felt this behavior was childish on their mom’s part. It would lead him to spend more time with Maddie so that she felt properly loved growing up. As a result of this, Maddie and her dad became very close. Her dad supported her goals and endeavors, and he loved her for the person she was. Her mom got upset at this and called it favoritism, ironic coming from her. Nowadays, she is a lot more distant from her mom but very close to her dad. During her senior year, her parents had a sort of 'soft divorce'. They were still legally married but began to live in separate homes. During special occasions, the family would come together but it wasn't quite the same as before. Maddie would go on to live with her dad for the time being.
