Overview.

Luke is a major side character for my story. He works as a convini employee, he's anxious and awkward. All of my characters come from the same story set in 2006.

ABOUT.

Despite how hard he tries not to, Luke often comes off as uneasy and distressed, getting flustered easily. He has a habit of putting up a nervous smile when he's anxious. He is a very cautious and fearful person, he’s the type to always take precautions during situations. He's much more of a realist, leaning more towards being pessimistic. He always seems to be on edge, being more shy in nature. Despite that, Luke is a kind and friendly person that simply wants to try his best for others. He is more of a reasonable person, preferring to be rational and follows the straight-man trope.

Due to his nervous demeanor, Luke always tries to be respectful when talking to other people. He can be very awkward during conversations, often leading him to nervously laugh, stutter, and sweat profusely. He has a heavy reliance on buffer words such as "like, um, uh, basically, you know." Due to his appearance, Luke has very low self-esteem and low confidence. This also extends past his looks and he generally feels awful about his overall performance to do anything. Despite his want to help, he fears he'll be a burden and instead set others back further.

Story.

I. CHARACTER STORY.

If there was a word to describe Luke, it would be unlucky. After a nearly fatal accident, he has just been trying to get by the new social conditions imposed on him due to his appearance. Years have passed since this accident so Luke's gotten used to living like this. He's not the best well off economically, even being homeless for a while. But for the past 1.5 years, Luke's managed to get a stable job working at a convenience store. It's not ideal having people come in and immediately make gestures upon seeing him, but he has a job and a home now so he's not complaining.

II. EARLY LIFE.

I'm still writing this but here's a quick summary bc it's kinda important to his story and character. Luke grew up as part of a wealthy family, think of the type that goes to the country club regularly in the summer. Life is good y'know, until it was not. He got into a very big accident when he was like 7, very bad very ugly. Gets rushed to the emergency room but then the doctors find out that like 50% of his body is missing entirely, cuz it exploded and shit. I'm not a doctor so I don't know surgery and doctor stuff, so what I'm about to say might be very cringe if you do know about that. The doctors grab a body donor of a guy who died of hypothermia, and put Luke back together with that. He survives, somehow idk, but he now looks like that. His very rich family, that is also very self-conscious about their image, despise how he looks now. His parents make the decision to legally disown him at 18, so they leave him in the streets basically. Until that day comes, his family and much of the people around him avoid him as much as possible. So Luke is an adult now, he's now also an orphan through dishonor. And now he's also very broke. He has nowhere to go and begins looking for a job. He gets a job, awesome. He basically lives in a cheap motel at this time. During work, a customer offers him a better job. It's a job at a convenience store. Why is this job better? He gets free housing within the store. Wow this Viktor guy that offered me this position seems like such a nice guy, Luke thinks to himself. He is also very shady and quite possibly a criminal, but I'm gonna ignore that because I don't want to get fired and evicted. Anyways, life is getting a bit better for him now. III. PRESENT STORY.

At present, Luke's is still working at the convenience store. Life has been peaceful for him, a little too peaceful... His boss, Viktor, comes by the store one day. He's a really busy person so Luke doesn't get to see him often. During his visit, Viktor mentions to Luke that he will be hiring someone new. Luke has been working in the convenience store by himself all this time, aside from the manager who practically hates him. This was a pleasant surprise... and maybe an opportunity to make a friend? Unfortunately for Luke, things have been going too peaceful for him, so let's ruin that. He soon learns that his new co-worker is the second coming of satan, Louis. For the second time, Luke's life has completely changed once again.

DESIGN NOTES.
Luke's design was inspired by Hoodude from Monster High.
He probably has one of the more complex designs I've made so hear me out on this and get ready for the yap. Although he's not technically part of the scene substyle, Luke's design was heavily inspired by it and other alternative styles. Since these substyles were often considered weird in the 2000s, I felt this social perception of the style fit with Luke's characteristic of also being considered a "social outcast", as a type of character coding.
This could go into his backstory later idk: Luke's jacket is one the most significant parts of his design. Due to his accident, his school life had become significantly more difficult. He wasn't really bullied, but he wasn't included either. During the 90s and 2000s, which would be the time when Luke would be canonically in high school, varsity jackets were a popular clothing item in both school and popular media. Luke would notice how most of the popular people at school would wear these jackets. He always felt there was a sense of unity between those who wore them, so he would begin to save money to buy his own jacket. He wasn't in any sports so he didn't have any related patches to add on to his jacket as the other guys did. So instead, Luke would add his own patches and messily stitch them on his own. That way he would look more like the other guys and felt like he fit in, as that was all he wanted. He really had a strong yearning of fitting in due to his appearance during his earlier years, and that feeling would go on to follow him later.
In his current age after already graduating high school, Luke still wears his overpriced school varsity jacket. It fits slightly small, but he still insists on wearing it. Even though he's not in school anymore, he still wears it for the reason to look like he was part of something. As an adult, he's still being constantly judged and treated differently for his looks. So he believes that maybe by continuing to wear this jacket, others will maybe treat him a little less harshly because they'll see that he was actually a part of a group and hasn't just been a sad loner all of his life.
The patches on his jacket are just random. His current refs are inconsistent, but I do want to redraw some of the patches to be inspired by media that was popular in the 90s and 2000s.
He has some eyebags and prominent eye veins due to his stress and anxiety.
This is explained kinda properly in his backstory, but the blue skin-patches are body donor parts from a person who died of hypothermia. Due to the size of his accident, these stitches are considerably large and messy. He covers his eye with his hair since it looks pretty bruised, similar to a black eye.

GOALS + DREAMS Luke never had the chance to go to college, because he never really received the support from his family or school to do so. He still really wishes to and believes it would be a major help with his current living status. After his accident, he's never been seen as equal to other people ever again. He's gotten used to it over time to the point it's something he doesn't put too much mind to, but he still has the small desire that one day it will happen.
FEARS One of Luke's greatest fears is having his body completely fall apart. He worries that his stitching will undo and that his skin-patches will fall apart. He places bandages specifically on parts of his body that he's most paranoid about, this being: his neck, his left arm, and his right leg. For his arm and leg, he places the bandages both under and over his clothes, for extra caution. Since he can't feel much, he's terrified that bugs may be crawling on him without noticing so he constantly checks himself.
SECRETS He doesn't really have any secrets. But he's good at keeping secrets, especially if you blackmail him.
QUIRKS Occasionally sleep walks. Shows up to meetings or appointments extra early. Gets very expressive with his hands when he's anxious. Places important belongings inside the vents, in case he ever gets robbed. Randomly smiling, as way to be polite to others so they don't judge him too badly.
MANNERISMS Fidgeting with his clothes, especially his jacket. Overthinking. Cold showers. Creating scenarios in his mind. Chewing on licorice, but never actually eating it. Constantly checks for bugs on him. Scratches his head a lot. Cracks his knuckles often. Mumbles when annoyed.

Due to his skin-patches, the coldness of them has made him somewhat numb so he doesn't feel much (touch, temperatures, pain sometimes).

He has terrible luck. He believes most of his luck ran out from surviving his accident.

Even though he's not Australian, he pronounces Z as Zed because one of his childhood friends did so, and managed to convince him that this was the correct way to say it.
If Luke was from the modern day he would watch those alpha sigma podcasts because he's desperate.
His fav Sanrio character, because I assign all my characters one (I'm whimsical and joyous), is Pochacco.
More whimsy, bc I'm a filthy smash player, his mains are Luigi & Mr Game & Watch. He's kind of good at the game, but is nearly always stuck in 2nd place. He just likes Luigi, they could probably be friends tbh. Good with Mr G&W but can never hit a 9. His obsession to get a 9 is likely what's making him lose at games but that doesn't stop him from trying.
My new obssesion is Marvel Rivals so his main is Hawkeye. Heard that he's good and meta, so decided to play him. Not that sweaty (yet), but has pretty good aim. Anytime there's an enemy Hawkeye he makes it his mission to outplay him no matter what for some reason. He thinks that those people who show off all their lords before the game stink. The first person to give into playing support when everybody has already instalocked dps.

Relationships.

MADDIE [ close friend ]

Maddie is one of the few people Luke has gotten close to ever since his accident. Since the cafe she works at is directly next to his own work, they get to interact often. They're very friendly with each other, but Luke can sometimes feel nervous around her due to her more assertive personality. He also lets her take freebies from the store he works at. Luke doesn't really know why Maddie likes to hang out around him, since he's used to being avoided, but he enjoys her company nonetheless. They got that loser boy x popular girl dynamic.

LOUIS [ co-worker ]

The two are coworkers at the convini. Luke isn't too fond of Louis, due to his laziness and overall personality. But he also doesn't like Louis because he sort of blackmails him. Basically, Luke caught him doing his hitman job, as one does, and was noticed by him. Louis was friendly to him during this situation, saying he won't hurt him but he did imply that he'll do something to Luke if he speaks up. Louis considers Luke a friend yet also constantly torments and annoys him. Luke considers him a nuisance but is simultaneously terrified of him.

CHRIS [ friend ]

The two became friends due to their workplaces being close to each other. Luke was initially put off by how hard it was to talk to Chris but got used to it later, they then found they have similar interests. They like going to the arcade together, Chris always ends up beating Luke in the fighting games.

ERIC [ friend ]

Eric is basically Luke's only other friend, they met in middle school. The two were considered the outcasts of school, so they bonded over this and remained good friends throughout middle and high school. Unfortunately, Eric had to move away due to college, but the two of them still message each other often. Unrelated but his friend's name is Eric since that used to be Luke's name until I redesigned him.
